Our clients loved their neighborhood and large backyard with mature trees. With the addition of a new daughter, the house needed a better flow with connections to the outdoors. A sensible budget forced us to stay within the original footprint and envelope. We captured the existing front porch creating a more inviting entry from the street, and peeled off a cramped laundry room at the back to open the kitchen to the backyard and new pool. We removed a load-bearing wall between the kitchen and living room, and installed a generous island that is a main gathering spot. We cannibalized an interior bedroom to provide another route to the backyard along with a laundry room and built-in workspace. The addition of a carport with exposed timbers and paint grip roof and board-formed concrete wall give the house more presence, while creating a cozy private courtyard to the primary suite.
